Classic Synth Design Modernized For A New Era

ICONIC’s user interface centers around an XY Pad with 4 selectable Macro Effects that modulate multiple parameters simultaneously. Blending a vintage knob-per-function design, with sleek modern styling, all of ICONIC’s controls are easily accessible in a single page. Shape these ICONIC synth sounds from the dual filters that can be modulated, an advanced 16-step arpeggiator, multi-mode portamento (glide), and a bevy of effects to widen, pulse, distort, delay, and spatialize the final sound.

Lyrical Leads and Basses

Enable Portamento to dial in pitch slides between 2 notes, creating lyrical monophonic sounds that will make your leads and basses sing. With the Arpeggiator engaged, Portamento creates slides in pitch between the individual notes for some truly expressive patterns. Portamento can even be used with polyphonic sounds like a pad to add movement between chords.

Advanced Arpeggiator

Program dynamic and complex arpeggiator patterns with Iconic’s feature-rich 16-step Arpeggiator, featuring velocity scaling, sync and unsynced rates, swing, gate, random and more.

Macro Effects Mayhem

Select between 4 Macro Effects – Stutter, Dream, Space, and Grit – then control 2 or more parameters simultaneously by moving the XY Pad Control (the node at the intersection of the X and Y coordinates).

Modulation Sources

Once you’ve added some modulation using the 3 Modulation Amount knobs in the Ring Mod and HP/LP Filter sections, you can create different rhythms and movement by adjusting the settings on their corresponding Modulation Sources.

  • LFO: This Modulation Source is selectable between an LFO and STEP. LFO creates smooth or angular movement with a variety of waveforms and shapes, and at a wide range of speeds, whether they’re synced to tempo or running freely at audio rate. Similarly, STEP can also run at a variety of speeds, etc, but uses a step sequencer with up to 32-steps to create movement that is more rhythmic in nature.
  • Envelope: This Modulation Source changes the target parameter over time using a 4-stage ADSR Envelope (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release). For example, you can create sharp, snappy filter attacks, or slowly evolving Ring Modulation movement.
  • Velocity: This Modulation Source uses incoming MIDI Note Velocity values (1-127) from your MIDI controller or sequencer to affect the target parameter. For instance, it can be used to open and close a filter cutoff depending on how fast or slow you strike the keys/pads (velocity) on your MIDI controller.
Creative Stereo Panning

Produce rhythmic pans of any speed or shape with Auto Pan, be it synced to the tempo, or running freely at audio rate. Increase the Width control to add more intensity to the effect.

Wide as the Sky

Create a wide stereo image by dialing in some Stereo Double effect to blend more of the source signal into either the left or right channel.

Depth and Dimensionality

A host of on-board effects are at your disposal, including a multi-mode Ensemble Chorus effect made famous on string machines, and a Phaser Stone effect that emulates the coveted sound of vintage multi-stage phaser pedals.

Experimental Textures

Create metallic, bell-like tones by adding a bit of ring modulation to the sound source.

  • Add Rhythm and Movement: Use the 3 bipolar Modulation Amount knobs to apply modulation in either a positive or negative direction to the Ring Mod Amount parameter from the following Modulation Sources: Velocity, Envelope, and LFO/Step LFO.
Dual Filter Design

With its versatile dual filter design, and up to 3 selectable filter types each, the High Pass (HP) Filter and Low Pass (LP) Filter offer a wide range of sonic possibilities, including 2 and 4 pole state variable filters, and the classic Ladder filter design (LP) popularized by Moog analogue synthesizers.

  • Add Rhythm and Movement: Use the 3 bipolar Modulation Amount knobs to apply modulation in either a positive or negative direction to the HP and LP Filter Cutoff frequencies from the following Modulation Sources: Velocity, Envelope, and LFO/Step LFO.
Space and Time

Polish off the sound by mixing in delay and reverb send effects. The EP-1 Delay is an emulation of the prized Echoplex magnetic tape delay, and EastWest’s acclaimed convolution Reverb effect that features hundreds of impulse responses (IRs) that capture real spaces like studios, halls, and cathedrals.

Harmonically Rich

With Drive, produce everything from added warmth and texture, to extremely aggressive noise by driving the signal through 1 of 3 types: Bit Crusher, Distortion, and Fuzz.

Classic Sounds Reimagined For The Future

While ICONIC features synths and sounds used in classic songs that have sold hundreds of millions of copies, it's not stuck in any time period. After recording these rare synthesizers in EastWest Studio 1, the producers also sent the sounds to analog tape machines (include a tube Studer J37) and pushed them to levels to create tape saturation and harmonic distortion for an alternative modern sound. The instruments were also re-amped into EastWest Studio 2, using multiple mic positions so the studio sound could be added to the direct sounds, a technique that was often used by Thriller recording and mixing engineer Bruce Swedien.
